Pitlochry
House, Perthshire
Ewan
Cameron Architects were invited to produce designs for a luxurious
retreat in the foothills of the Scottish Highlands.
The
villa is orientated to maximise daylight and optimise energy efficiency
through “passive solar gain” with large expanses of glass
on the south elevation. The stepped form of the south elevation allows
for dramatic views across the valley to be enjoyed from numerous vantage
points.
The pitched roof, finished with traditional slate, responds to the rural
Highland vernacular and climate, however here it is given a contemporary
twist. The pitch is emphasised and expressed to increase the sense of
shelter. The traditional pitch has been split to allow light into the
heart of the building and creates a dramatic, sculptural form in the landscape.
The building comprises a wealth of different spatial experiences and rooms
of varied character which are always positioned to take in the best views
of the surrounding landscape. The drama of the main living space with
its majestic views and fireplace contrasts with the cosiness of the snug,
and breakfasting areas which also share the same prime views.
On the north side of the house the external courtyard and adjacent woods
provide shelter from the prevailing wind and rain.
